Deformation and failure mechanisms of granular soil around pressurised shallow cavities

The deformation patterns and failure mechanisms of pressurised cavities at shallow depth are relevant to many geotechnical applications, including tunnelling horizontal directional drilling. In this paper, an experimental study a reduced-scale cavity under geostatic stress is presented, in order measure the effect length, vertical soil density on failure. X-ray computed tomography used acquire images system key stages inflation process. A closed-shaped region developed around cavities, beyond which shear planes elliptic paraboloid shape formed, extending from bottom all way free surface. plane-strain assumption did not hold central portion longest tested (L = 6D). volumetric strain porosity changes inside bands showed significant dilation dense specimens, but contraction loose specimens. average orientation thickness were agreement with those found literature for passive arching (anchoring). principal strains follows catenary shapes, similar displayed active trapdoor mechanisms.
